Maintenance

A well maintained spa will provide years of enjoyment for you and your family. When properly maintained, all of your spa's components will operate correctly. However, a poorly maintained spa can be a nightmare. Most spa problems arise from not fully understanding your spa and what is necessary to keep it operating properly throughout the year. Here are a few tips to ensure a healthier and more pleasant spa experience.

The most important thing about your spa is the water. Maintaining proper water balance will prevent costly repairs on heaters, pumps, bearings, seals, etc. It will also eliminate bacteria and promote a healthier spa use. Also, be aware that most spa manufacturers including Artesian do not cover components damaged by misuse or neglect of chemicals and improper water balance. Improperly balanced water can and will destroy your spa over time.

Foreign debris such as sand, stones and leaves will damage your spa. Sand and stones accumulate in the bottom of the spa and are pulled into the intake ports at the bottom of the spa. It is then pulled through the plumbing, damaging the pumps and eventually accumulating behind the jets causing the jet bearings to fail. Leaves will accumulate quickly in the filters obstructing water flow causing the filters to collapse. Damage from foreign debris is also not covered under warrantee.

If you plan to enjoy your spa all year round, maintenance will be different through the different seasons.

Summer: Bacteria growth is faster, requiring more frequent maintenance and chemicals.

Fall: Many spa owners enjoy this season the most. However, leaves can cause clogged filters, water imbalance and clogged pump intakes. Keep spa free from leaves and bugs.

Winter: Again, a very popular season for spa users. Beware! Although it is a great time to use your spa, if it is not properly maintained and monitored, extreme damage can be done to your spa and your bank account. Be sure of the following:

  • You have a good spa cover to prevent heat loss in cold weather.

  • New filters to ensure proper water flow over the heater element.

  • Any loud motor noise should be checked before the winter season.

  • NEVER DRAIN YOUR SPA IN TEMPERATURES BELOW 40°

If you plan to close your spa for the winter, it must be done properly by a trained professional. After your spa is drained, there is still water trapped in your spa's plumbing. If the spa is not properly winterized, this water will freeze and crack the plumbing, jets, and pumps resulting in extremely expensive repairs. SPA FREEZINGS ARE NOT COVERED UNDER WARRANTEE! All spa closings must be done in temperatures above 40° and before November 30th .

Spring: After the winter season, your spa will require a thorough cleaning. Cleaning the spa's surface is not enough. Hidden inside your plumbing is bacteria that has been growing for months. A complete spa flush may be required. Call the store for further details.
